Hey everyone, October is here! Thanks for stopping by Dis Downlow for our weekend update. As you might have seen, there are lot of interesting rumors floating around this week about Disney buying Twitter and/or Netflix! We’re not really sure what that’s all about, but we’ll keep an eye on it.
In the meantime, The Downlow for Sunday, October 2, is here!
- On Friday, we linked to a story from Gizmodo/io9 about abandoned Disney properties. One of those properties, a portion of the Disney’s Pop Century Resort that was completely finished but ultimately shelved after 9/11, caught our attention. Fun fact – that finished portion of Pop Century later opened as Disney’s Art of Animation, a great resort that we’ll be staying at later this year! Theme Park Tourist has a fantastic in-depth look at how those old, shuttered Pop Century buildings were turned into Disney’s premiere hotel for large family groups.
- One of my (Gabe) favorite souvenirs to get at WDW is a coffee mug! We’ve got a cabinet full at home and we always seem to find room for one or two more. Our friends over at WDW News Today have posted photos of some of the new coffee mugs that will soon be available for purchase at the Florida parks!
- In other important “mug” news, collectors are super excited about the Hitchhiking Ghosts tiki mug that was available only in Souther California at Disneyland’s Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar. There had been no word about those mugs making their way to Florida, until recently when Inside the Magic reported that the mugs were spotted at the Trader Sam’s at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort!! No word on when the mugs will be on sale, but we would LOVE to get our hands on one!
- Finally, yesterday (October 1) was Walt Disney World’s 45th birthday! The resort opened with the Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971. To honor the occasion, the Orlando Sentinel’s Daily Disney blog has a list of “45 Ways You Must Do Disney“! Enjoy!
Do you collect any Disney/Universal souvenirs? Are you planning a visit to WDW during its 45th year? If so, leave us a comment or contact Ang to get moving on some travel quotes! Her services are absolutely free if you book through her and, even though I’m biased, I think you’ll find that she plans one magical vacation!
